Xianxia draws on Chinese religious and mythological ideas but reshapes them for popular fiction. Common concepts include sects, spiritual roots, qi, heavenly tribulations, reincarnation, immortal realms, karmic consequences, and the pursuit of the Dao.
How dramas use it
In dramas, xianxia often includes multiple realms, long lifespans, immortal clans, magical artifacts, sword flight, spiritual cultivation, and love stories stretched across lifetimes. The emotional scale is frequently as large as the cosmology.
Usage & formality
The border between xianxia and xuanhuan is not absolute. Xianxia usually retains a stronger Daoist, cultivation, or immortality framework, while xuanhuan allows freer invented systems.
