xuánhuàn
Also written: xuanhuan; xuan huan; mysterious fantasy; Chinese fantasy
A broad Chinese fantasy category with flexible worldbuilding, invented power systems, and elements that may come from Chinese mythology, cultivation fiction, science fiction, games, or non-Chinese fantasy traditions.
Literal meaning
mysterious fantasy
Cultural context
The modern category became especially important in web fiction, where it can hold stories that do not fit neatly into wuxia, xianxia, science fiction, or Western-style fantasy. Its defining feature is creative freedom rather than one required religious or historical framework.
How dramas use it
A xuanhuan drama may resemble xianxia visually while using a wholly invented cosmology, ranking system, species, technology, or magic. Adaptations often retain cultivation-like progression without making Daoist immortality the central goal.
Usage & formality
It is too narrow to define xuanhuan only as “Chinese plus Western fantasy.” Some works do blend traditions, but the category is broader than that.
