Older meanings of zōngmén relate to lineage or religious tradition. Modern cultivation stories use it as a major organizational unit, often larger and more institutional than one teacher’s immediate disciple family.

A zōngmén recruits disciples, controls spiritual resources, assigns missions, holds competitions, guards secret manuals, and becomes involved in alliances or wars with rival sects.
Usage & formality
The difference between zōngmén and ménpài is not fixed across fiction. Some dramas use them interchangeably; others make zōngmén the larger institution and ménpài a school or branch.
