The Fall and Massacre of Xindu

Fourteen years before the main story, Qiao Gui fails to send the reinforcements promised to the Wei family. Li Su captures Xindu and orders a massacre that kills Wei Shao / Zhong Lin's grandfather, father, and elder brother. The surviving child grows up carrying the trauma and blaming the Qiao clan.

Qiao Fan Flees the Marriage

Qiao Man Enters the Panyi Crisis
Qiao Man / travels toward Panyi carrying the city seal and presenting herself as the replacement bride. Wei Shao / Zhong Lin wants the strategically important territory but remains hostile to the Qiao family. Liu Yan / Mao Qing also moves to prevent the marriage and retain his claim over Qiao Man.
Qiao Man Burns Liu Yan's Sulfur Stores

Liu Yan / Mao Qing prepares to use the dam near Panyi to flood Xindu and obstruct Wei. Qiao Man / burns the sulfur needed for the attack because she refuses to sacrifice civilians for political advantage. Her action protects Xindu and permanently changes how she views her former betrothed.

Su E Huang / Lady Yu Lou arrives carrying her old connection to the Wei family and the prestige of her peony legend. Wei Shao / Zhong Lin feels obligated to protect her because she had been intended for his elder brother. Her arrival introduces a powerful rival to Qiao Man / inside both the household and the wider political struggle.
The States Support the Canal Plan

Wei Shao / Zhong Lin and Qiao Man / use the Luli gathering to present the expanded Yongning Canal as a shared regional project.
