The Prisoner of Beauty

Fourteen years before the main story, Qiao Gui fails to send the reinforcements promised to the Wei family. Li Su captures Xindu and orders a massacre that kills Wei Shao / Zhong Lin's grandfather, father, and elder brother. The surviving child grows up carrying the trauma and blaming the Qiao clan.

Qiao Man / uses water-control maps, lantern signals, and false troop movements to support Wei Shao / Zhong Lin with a much smaller force. The strategy convinces the invaders that reinforcements are approaching and disrupts Liu Yan / Mao Qing's campaign. Her victory protects both Yanzhou and Wei.

Qiao Ping refuses to join the campaign against Wei and challenges his brother's betrayal of the family alliance. Qiao Yue drugs and blinds him, removing Yanzhou's most capable administrator from command. The attack ends any possibility of reconciliation between the brothers.
