Characters

38characters
Main Role

Xiao Qiao

小乔

Qiao Man, commonly called Xiao Qiao, is the intelligent daughter of Qiao Ping and granddaughter of the Qiao clan patriarch. She volunteers to replace her cousin in a political marriage to Wei Shao to protect Yanzhou, then uses diplomacy, engineering knowledge, and concern for civilians to turn a hostile alliance into a genuine partnership. Her central conflict is balancing loyalty to the Qiao family with the need to earn trust inside a household that blames her clan for an old massacre.

Main Role

Wei Shao

魏劭

Wei Shao is the young ruler of Wei, a formidable commander who protects his people but carries deep trauma and hatred after his father and brother were killed at Xindu. He accepts a political marriage with Qiao Man while suspecting the Qiao family, creating a relationship built first on strategy and distrust. His arc centers on choosing whether inherited vengeance will govern him or whether he can build a different future with Qiao Man.

Antagonist

Su E Huang

苏娥皇

Su E Huang is a noblewoman of Wushan, the widow of Chen Xiang, and the former intended bride of Wei Bao. Having been treated as a political asset by her birth family, she pursues status and military power through the legend surrounding her peony mark. She becomes a principal opponent of the Qiao-Wei alliance, repeatedly exploiting old loyalties, romantic attachments, and regional conflict to advance herself.

Support Role

Wei Yan

魏俨

Wei Yan is Wei Shao's cousin, raised in the Wei household as Lady Xu's beloved grandson. Charming and outwardly carefree, he struggles with the concealed truth of his birth and with feeling protected but not fully trusted with responsibility. His affection for Qiao Man and his discovery that Chen Pang is his biological father place him between personal desire, Wei family loyalty, and a possible future in Bianzhou.

Antagonist

Liu Yan

刘琰

Liu Yan is the heir and later ruler of Langya, who was once betrothed to Qiao Man and continues to treat her as the center of his personal ambitions. He presents devotion as love while repeatedly sacrificing civilians, relatives, and allies for power. His resentment toward Wei Shao and inability to accept Qiao Man's rejection make him one of the drama's principal military and romantic antagonists.

Mentor

Lady Xu

徐太夫人

Lady Xu is Wei Shao's grandmother, Wei Yan's maternal grandmother, and the senior authority of the Wei household. Wise, politically perceptive, and more willing than the younger generation to look beyond inherited hatred, she supports the Qiao-Wei marriage as a path toward peace. She becomes a protective mentor to Qiao Man while also guarding painful family secrets involving Wei Yan's birth.

Support Role

Da Qiao

大乔

Qiao Fan, commonly called Da Qiao, is Qiao Yue's daughter and Qiao Man's older cousin. Gentle but capable of decisive action, she rejects a political marriage and chooses a life with Bi Zhi, eventually taking responsibility for Boya and their family. Her conflict intensifies when her father and Liu Yan use her as leverage against Bi Zhi and the Qiao-Wei alliance.

Love Interest

Bi Zhi

比彘

Bi Zhi begins as a Qiao family horse slave whose loyalty and martial ability are underestimated because of his status. He and Qiao Fan choose each other despite the clan's expectations, and he builds power largely to protect their household. His greatest vulnerability is that enemies can manipulate him by threatening Qiao Fan.

Mentor

Gongsun Yang

公孙羊

Gongsun Yang is Wei Shao's senior strategist and previously advised Wei Lun. He provides military counsel, institutional memory, and a stabilizing presence when personal grievances threaten sound decisions. He often helps translate the older Wei generation's experience into guidance for Wei Shao's rule.

Family Member

Qiao Gui

乔圭

Qiao Gui is the elderly patriarch of the Qiao clan and the former ally of Wei Lun. His failure to send promised reinforcements during the Battle of Xindu caused the Wei family to suffer catastrophic losses and created the feud that defines the drama. In the present, he seeks to preserve Yanzhou and his descendants while living with the political and moral consequences of that betrayal.

Family Member

Qiao Ping

乔平

Qiao Ping is the younger son of Qiao Gui and the father of Qiao Man and Qiao Ci. A capable, farsighted administrator, he earns public respect that increasingly threatens his elder brother Qiao Yue. His commitment to responsible rule places him in danger when family jealousy and Liu Yan's ambitions fracture Yanzhou.

Antagonist

Qiao Yue

乔越

Qiao Yue is Qiao Gui's eldest son, Qiao Fan's father, and the nominal ruler of Yanzhou. Insecure about Qiao Ping's greater competence and popularity, he follows Zhang Pu's manipulative advice and repeatedly chooses short-term control over family unity. His jealousy makes him vulnerable to Liu Yan and turns him into an internal antagonist within the Qiao clan.

Family Member

Lady Zhu

朱夫人

Lady Zhu is Wei Shao's mother and the widow of Wei Jing. Grief over the deaths at Xindu hardens her against the Qiao family, and she favors her niece Zheng Chu Yu as a more acceptable wife for Wei Shao. Her conflict with Qiao Man is driven less by strategy than by unresolved mourning, pride, and fear of betraying the dead.

Support Role

Wei Liang

魏梁

Wei Liang is one of Wei Shao's four trusted generals, known for his shield, blunt humor, and fierce loyalty. His combative first encounters with Xiao Tao develop into a sincere romance that gives his military role a warmer domestic dimension. During the final conflict, he is caught in the consequences of Qiao Yue's betrayal while protecting Qiao Ci and carrying out Wei Shao's orders.

Support Role

Xiao Tao

小桃

Xiao Tao is Qiao Man's outspoken dowry maid and the daughter of Chun Niang. Loyal, practical, and often comic, she helps Qiao Man navigate the hostile Wei household while openly challenging anyone she thinks is mistreating her mistress. Her quarrels with Wei Liang gradually become a romantic bond.

Family Member

Qiao Ci

乔慈

Qiao Ci is Qiao Man's younger brother and Qiao Ping's son. Trained in martial arts and fiercely protective of his family, he matures from an impulsive youth into a dependable participant in the Qiao-Wei alliance. His loyalty is tested when Qiao Yue's faction turns against his father and sister.

Rival

Gao Heng

高恒

Gao Heng is an aristocratic scholar celebrated for his learning and independent temperament. He openly admires Qiao Man's intellect and poetry, making him a harmless but highly visible source of jealousy for Wei Shao. His role is primarily intellectual and social rather than military.

Support Role

Wei Qu

魏渠

Wei Qu is one of Wei Shao's four closest generals and a skilled user of paired blades. Dry-witted and dependable, he often acts as the sharper counterpoint to Wei Liang's louder personality. His loyalty is severely tested in the final campaign, where he suffers a permanent injury while recovering Wei Liang's body and completing the mission.

Support Role

Wei Xiao

魏枭

Wei Xiao is the quiet archer among Wei Shao's four trusted generals. He lost his father in the old war and initially directs intense hatred toward the Qiao family, even seeing Qiao Man as a legitimate target. Her courage and conduct gradually force him to distinguish her from the choices of her elders.

Support Role

Wei Duo

魏朵

Wei Duo is the youngest of Wei Shao's four trusted generals. He is especially skilled at tracking people and reading traces, making him useful in searches and field operations. Because of his age, the others often treat him as the junior member despite his competence.

Family Member

Chun Niang

春娘

Chun Niang is Qiao Man's longtime nurse and the mother of Xiao Tao. She accompanies the marriage party into Wei territory and provides Qiao Man with maternal care, household knowledge, and emotional steadiness. Her priority is the safety and dignity of the young woman she helped raise.

Family Member

Lady Ding

丁夫人

Lady Ding is Qiao Yue's wife and Qiao Fan's mother. After Qiao Man and Qiao Ci lose their mother, she treats them as her own children and becomes an important source of family protection. Her loyalty to the younger generation increasingly conflicts with her husband's jealousy and betrayal.

Antagonist

Zhang Pu

张浦

Zhang Pu is Qiao Yue's adviser and the political mind behind several of Yanzhou's most destructive choices. He exploits Qiao Yue's insecurity about Qiao Ping and encourages cooperation with Liu Yan. His schemes weaken the Qiao family from within and help turn a sibling rivalry into open betrayal.

Antagonist

Chen Pang

陈滂

Chen Pang is Chen Xiang's uncle and a senior power figure in Bianzhou. He is also Wei Yan's biological father, a truth tied to the violent coercion of Lady Xu's daughter and concealed from Wei Yan for years. He opposes Su E Huang's influence and later becomes the ruler whose eventual succession draws Wei Yan toward Bianzhou.

Antagonist

Li Su

李肃

Li Su is the brutal Bianzhou commander responsible for capturing Xindu and ordering a three-day massacre. He embodies the unresolved atrocity behind Wei Shao's hatred and the Wei family's demand for justice. His capture forces the story to distinguish punishment of the actual perpetrator from vengeance against the entire Qiao clan.

Support Role

Zhen Zhi

甄值

Zhen Zhi is the magistrate of Xindu who surrendered during the old invasion to protect civilians from further slaughter. He is a principled administrator and former canal-building partner of Yang Feng, with whom he shares a long-running argumentative friendship. His service helps rehabilitate Xindu and supports the wider canal vision before the final war reaches the city.

Antagonist

Su Zi Xin

苏子信

Su Zi Xin is the heir of Wushan and Su E Huang's younger brother. Proud and resentful after losing to Qiao Ci at the Luli competition, he is easily recruited into his sister's schemes. He spreads a damaging rumor about Qiao Man and Wei Yan, but his capture exposes Su E Huang's involvement.

Family Member

Liu Shan

刘扇

Liu Shan is Liu Yan's uncle and a senior member of the Langya royal family. He repeatedly urges Liu Yan to govern through conciliation rather than fear and reckless warfare. When Liu Yan seizes power and turns on his own kin, Liu Shan's caution cannot protect him.

Antagonist

Wei Dian

魏典

Wei Dian is Wei Shao's uncle and a regional general who resents the younger ruler's authority. His alliance with Yuan Wang and his independent military position create an internal threat to Wei Shao's consolidation of Wei. Qiao Man helps expose and divide that alliance, after which Wei Qu defeats him.

Support Role

Xiao Zao

小枣

Xiao Zao is one of the attendants who accompanies Qiao Man from Yanzhou into the Wei household. She assists with daily household tasks and helps maintain Qiao Man's private circle in an initially hostile environment. Her individual history and independent motivation receive limited development.

Support Role

Xiao Tan

小檀

Xiao Tan is a careful and dependable male attendant in Wei Shao's household. He carries out Qiao Man's discreet arrangements when Wei Shao temporarily lives at the government office, providing food, medicine, and warmth without revealing her involvement at first. His role is supportive and domestic rather than political.

Support Role

Chen Lie

陈烈

Chen Lie is a military subordinate associated with Chen Pang's faction in Bianzhou. He supports that faction during the struggle over regional authority, but the drama gives him little independent motivation or personal arc. Available cast summaries do not consistently document his final fate.

Support Role

Jiang Ao

姜媪

Jiang Ao is a senior attendant serving Lady Zhu in the Wei household. She helps carry out Lady Zhu's domestic instructions and is present during the tension between Lady Zhu and Qiao Man. She has limited independent characterization beyond loyalty to her mistress.

Support Role

Zhu Quan

朱权

Zhu Quan is Wei Yan's longtime personal servant and has attended him since childhood. He acts as a practical aide, confidant, and witness to Wei Yan's private behavior, including the conflict over his feelings for Qiao Man. His loyalty is personal rather than factional.

Rival

Lan Yun

兰云

Lan Yun is a wine seller or entertainer whose resemblance to Qiao Man attracts Wei Yan's attention. After realizing that his idealized image is not truly about her, she tries to use knowledge of his feelings to secure a permanent place beside him. Rejected by Wei Yan, she is then exploited by Su E Huang as part of a rumor and revenge campaign.

Support Role

Liu Xiao

刘骁

Liu Xiao is a military officer serving Liu Yan during the final campaign. Liu Yan orders him to protect and escort Su E Huang, making him one of the last people entrusted with her safety. His attempt to carry out that order ends violently after he sees the face she is desperate to conceal.

Support Role

Zhong Ao

钟媪

Zhong Ao is an older female attendant who appears in the household network surrounding the principal families. She functions as a messenger and domestic support figure rather than as an independent political actor. Public cast sources confirm her presence but provide little reliable detail about her exact affiliation or arc.

Support Role

Xing Er

杏儿

Xing Er is a minor female attendant appearing within the drama's household ensemble. Her scenes support domestic communication and service around higher-ranking characters rather than a separate storyline. Available public cast listings do not clearly establish her principal mistress or final fate.
