I used to think historical drama parents were impossibly controlling and that their children just needed to stand up for themselves. Then I started learning about filial piety, and suddenly those scenes looked completely different. I realized the characters weren't simply trying to avoid upsetting Mom or Dad—they believed their actions reflected on generations before them and generations yet to come. That realization didn't make every decision easier to accept, but it made the stories feel richer, more authentic, and far more emotionally powerful than I had ever imagined.
