In the present day, Zhu Yan, leader of all demons, volunteers to surrender himself and disguises as the human Zhao Yuan Zhou, proposing to the Imperial Court that a Demon-Hunting Bureau be formed to quell the chaos caused by the Bai Ze goddess's death.

Long before the present-day story, Zhu Yan and Li Lun are the closest of friends, with Zhu Yan even giving Li Lun his own True Eyes so Li Lun would never be vulnerable to anyone. This deep bond stands in stark contrast to the bitter enmity that later defines their relationship.

Fei's arrival in Qing Geng's village causes a devastating plague that kills most of its human inhabitants, despite Qing Geng's own immunity to illness. The surviving villagers turn against her, destroying her temple even though she was innocent of causing the plague.

At some point in the past, the mountain and dragon god Zhu Yin is betrayed by a human man he once loved, an experience that hardens his views on human-demon coexistence and sets him on the path to seeking to free all demons from Dahuang.

Eight years before the present story, Zhu Yan and Li Lun turn against each other, ending their once-close friendship. This falling out results in Li Lun being sealed away by the Bai Ze goddess, setting the stage for the conflict that resurfaces once he is freed.

At some point before the present story, Ying Lei leaves his grandfather, the mountain god Ying Zhao, behind at Dahuang to pursue his dream of becoming a chef among humans, eventually crossing paths with Bai Jiu.

The goddess Bai Ze, who governed the realms of humans and demons, is accidentally killed by a demon, causing the disappearance of the Bai Ze Order. This throws both realms into chaos as demon beasts begin running rampant across the human world.

The archer Pei Si Jing joins in search of her missing brother, and the young doctor Bai Jiu joins as well, completing the core Demon-Hunting Bureau team alongside Zhao Yuan Zhou, Wen Xiao, and Zhuo Yi Chen.
