xiá

A Chinese cultural and literary figure who uses martial skill, courage, and personal moral judgment to defend others, correct injustice, or uphold a code of righteousness.
Literal meaning
a chivalrous person who uses ability to help others
Cultural context
Xiá is not simply the Chinese equivalent of a European knight. The figure is defined less by noble rank than by conduct: loyalty, courage, generosity, keeping one’s word, and acting when official institutions fail.
How dramas use it
Wuxia dramas describe wandering swordspeople, protectors, and martial heroes as xiá when their actions embody chivalric justice. A powerful fighter who acts selfishly is not automatically a xiá.
Usage & formality
The character appears in 武侠, wuxia, and in terms such as 侠客, xiákè. English subtitles may use hero, knight-errant, swordsman, or chivalrous warrior depending on context.
