nunchi
Also written: noonchi; social awareness; reading the room
The ability to notice and interpret other people’s feelings, intentions, expectations, and the unspoken atmosphere of a situation.
Literal meaning
social perception; awareness of unspoken cues
Cultural context
Nunchi helps a person adjust behavior without requiring everything to be stated directly. Having quick nunchi can be socially valuable; lacking it can make someone seem insensitive, oblivious, or disruptive.
How dramas use it
Workplace, family, school, and court scenes frequently depend on who reads the room correctly. A character with no nunchi misses danger, tension, romantic interest, or an elder’s indirect command.
Usage & formality
Nunchi is not mind reading. It is context-sensitive social observation, and pressure to show nunchi can also reinforce hierarchy or discourage direct communication.
