nǚxìng tícái
Also written: women-centered; female-centric; women’s stories; female-led subject matter
A broad label for stories centered on women’s lives, perspectives, relationships, work, family roles, social pressures, ambitions, and personal development.
Literal meaning
women-themed subject matter
Cultural context
The term describes subject matter rather than one fixed genre. A women-centered story may be contemporary, historical, comic, political, romantic, professional, or intergenerational, and it may present very different ideas about gender and independence.
How dramas use it
These dramas often give sustained attention to women’s friendships, careers, caregiving, marriage expectations, age, class, motherhood, divorce, identity, or survival. Romance may be present without controlling the whole narrative.
Usage & formality
“Female-centric” does not automatically mean feminist, romance-free, or written by women. The actual themes and point of view still need to be evaluated.
