See how the source and screen tellings relate: what stayed, what changed, and what each version contains that the other does not.

The drama preserves the novel's central forced-marriage-to-partnership arc, Liu Yuru and Gu Jiusi's mutual growth, the Gu family's collapse in Yangzhou, flight to Youzhou, rebuilding through commerce and government service, and the later transition into national political conflict. It substantially compresses the 176-entry source, softens or reshapes some characterization, introduces Luo Zishang much earlier as a visible antagonist, changes several family and political outcomes, and rewrites portions of the final succession crisis.

Coverage: The 40-episode drama adapts the main narrative trajectory through the novel's principal ending rather than stopping at one early arc. It compresses material spanning Liu Yuru and Gu Jiusi's marriage, Yangzhou, Youzhou, business development, Gu Jiusi's official career, war, river and fiscal affairs, Fan Yu's reign and the final Dongdu succession crisis. The source's three post-finale extras are outside the television series, and no reliable one-to-one chapter-to-episode mapping exists for most of

Factual differences surfaced from the canonical comparison records.

SOURCE GIVES YOU
  • Forced marriage between Liu Yuru and Gu Jiusi: The source gives extended access to Liu Yuru and Gu Jiusi's separate reasoning, social calculations and misunderstandings before and immediately after the marriage.
  • Liu Yuru taking a blade to retrieve Gu Jiusi from the brothel: The source provides Liu Yuru's internal fear, anger and calculations as she knowingly risks her reputation by taking direct action.
  • Gu Jiusi offering Liu Yuru future independence: The novel gives a detailed early conversation in which Gu Jiusi explicitly links Liu Yuru's ability to choose her future with earning and controlling her own wealth.
  • Liu Yuru's development as a merchant: The source gives more space to commercial decisions, negotiations, financial planning and the gradual accumulation of Liu Yuru's business experience.
  • Liu Yuru and Gu Jiusi becoming genuine partners: The source provides extended internal narration showing when each character's understanding of the other changes and how affection grows through accumulated daily experience.
  • Luo Zishang's placement in the narrative: The source allows Luo Zishang's role and connection to earlier events to emerge later within a broader political landscape.
  • Expansion from household story to national political conflict: The source gives much more space to factions, officials, military decisions, economic systems and the long consequences of regime change.
  • Overall narrative compression: The source gives greater depth to secondary figures, government systems, business development, journeys, political strategy and the gradual accumulation of the protagonists' influence.
  • The novel's prophetic opening dream: Readers begin the story knowing that apparently distant political events and the Gu family's eventual disaster are already embedded in the narrative's future.
  • Early-story tonal balance: The source overlays even the earliest domestic comedy with explicit foreknowledge of future violence through its opening nightmare.
SCREEN GIVES YOU
  • Forced marriage between Liu Yuru and Gu Jiusi: The drama stages the misunderstandings, forced wedding and hostile newlywed interactions directly through the lead performances.
  • Liu Yuru taking a blade to retrieve Gu Jiusi from the brothel: The screen version turns the confrontation into a physical and comic-dramatic set piece centered on the leads' changing power dynamic.
  • Gu Jiusi offering Liu Yuru future independence: The drama turns that principle into an extended visible progression through Liu Yuru's business training and changing relationship with Gu Jiusi.
  • Liu Yuru's development as a merchant: The drama visualizes her progression through shop management, negotiations, journeys for grain and increasingly public economic work.
  • Liu Yuru and Gu Jiusi becoming genuine partners: The drama provides sustained physical interaction, performance and shared action sequences that make the couple's changing comfort and trust visible.
  • Luo Zishang's placement in the narrative: The drama gives viewers a recurring antagonist whose actions provide continuity from the Yangzhou phase to the final succession conflict.
  • Expansion from household story to national political conflict: The drama condenses the national story around a smaller recurring ensemble and visually stages major battles, disasters and court confrontations.
  • Overall narrative compression: The drama connects the same major phases through a smaller number of recurring conflicts and characters, allowing the full central arc to conclude within one 40-episode season.
  • The novel's prophetic opening dream: The drama lets the early romantic and domestic story unfold before the scale of the later political catastrophe becomes apparent.
  • Early-story tonal balance: The drama creates a more pronounced audiovisual contrast between the colorful early newlywed period and the darker Yangzhou and political arcs.

Source synopsis

Liu Yuru has spent fifteen years carefully molding herself into the kind of proper young woman who can secure a respectable marriage and escape the insecurity of her father's household. Instead, circumstances force her to marry Gu Jiusi, Yangzhou's famously irresponsible wealthy playboy, who is equally unwilling to marry her. Their mismatched marriage gradually becomes a partnership. Liu Yuru learns commerce and develops an independent livelihood while Gu Jiusi grows from a privileged young wastrel into a public-minded official. When political upheaval destroys the security of the Gu family and throws the country into war, the couple flee Yangzhou, rebuild their lives in Youzhou and become increasingly involved in commerce, relief work, government, war and national reconstruction. Gu Jiusi ultimately rises to the highest levels of government while Liu Yuru becomes a major merchant and civic benefactor.
