See how the source and screen tellings relate: what stayed, what changed, and what each version contains that the other does not.

The drama preserves the novel's central forced-marriage-to-partnership arc, Liu Yuru and Gu Jiusi's mutual growth, the Gu family's collapse in Yangzhou, flight to Youzhou, rebuilding through commerce and government service, and the later transition into national political conflict. It substantially compresses the 176-entry source, softens or reshapes some characterization, introduces Luo Zishang much earlier as a visible antagonist, changes several family and political outcomes, and rewrites portions of the final succession crisis.

Coverage: The 40-episode drama adapts the main narrative trajectory through the novel's principal ending rather than stopping at one early arc. It compresses material spanning Liu Yuru and Gu Jiusi's marriage, Yangzhou, Youzhou, business development, Gu Jiusi's official career, war, river and fiscal affairs, Fan Yu's reign and the final Dongdu succession crisis. The source's three post-finale extras are outside the television series, and no reliable one-to-one chapter-to-episode mapping exists for most of

  • Collapse of the Gu family's security in Yangzhou: The drama concentrates the collapse into a highly visible sequence of siege, fire, executions, escape and personal losses.
  • Gu Langhua's fate: The drama makes Gu Langhua's death part of the permanent human cost of Yangzhou's collapse and an immediate component of Gu Jiusi's maturation.
  • Flight from Yangzhou to Youzhou: The drama shows the physical exhaustion, injuries and refugee crisis that accompany the journey.
  • Giving up private wealth for public survival: The drama gives the surrender of the Gu fortune a concentrated visual and emotional turning point during the Youzhou rebuilding arc.

Peaceful entry into Dongdu and Zhou Gaolang's succession

SOURCE

After Fan Yu agrees to abdicate, Gu Jiusi leads officials outside Dongdu and confronts Zhou Gaolang's approaching army. Gu Jiusi, Zhou Ye and Ye Shi'an persuade Zhou Gaolang to dismount, disarm and enter the capital peacefully rather than allow another destructive battle. Chapter 173
SCREEN

After Luo Zishang's coup is defeated and Fan Yu relinquishes the throne, Gu Jiusi leads officials outside Dongdu carrying the succession documents. Long-term future of Liu Yuru and Gu Jiusi

SOURCE

The main finale continues beyond the immediate political crisis to summarize the new reign, Gu Jiusi's rise to left chancellor, Liu Yuru's large commercial and charitable network and later family life. The source then provides three additional extras, including stories centered on their daughter Gu Jin, Ye Shi'an and Jiang He.

Chapter 173 and Extras 1-3, entries 174-176
SCREEN

The final episode similarly jumps forward to a more stable era in which Gu Jiusi is left chancellor and Liu Yuru remains associated with commerce and public welfare. Their young son appears in the closing family material, but the television story ends without adapting the novel's three post-finale extras.

Episode 40

How they relate: The broad prosperous future for the couple is preserved, but the drama compresses the source's later-life material and stops before the extra stories.

Source gives: The source provides additional family and supporting-character futures after the main political ending, including an extra centered on Gu Jin and separate extras for Ye Shi'an and Jiang He.

Screen gives: The drama closes the couple's story within the same finale that resolves the national succession conflict, providing a compact visual epilogue.

Source synopsis

Liu Yuru has spent fifteen years carefully molding herself into the kind of proper young woman who can secure a respectable marriage and escape the insecurity of her father's household. Instead, circumstances force her to marry Gu Jiusi, Yangzhou's famously irresponsible wealthy playboy, who is equally unwilling to marry her. Their mismatched marriage gradually becomes a partnership. Liu Yuru learns commerce and develops an independent livelihood while Gu Jiusi grows from a privileged young wastrel into a public-minded official. When political upheaval destroys the security of the Gu family and throws the country into war, the couple flee Yangzhou, rebuild their lives in Youzhou and become increasingly involved in commerce, relief work, government, war and national reconstruction. Gu Jiusi ultimately rises to the highest levels of government while Liu Yuru becomes a major merchant and civic benefactor.
