See how the source and screen tellings relate: what stayed, what changed, and what each version contains that the other does not.

The drama preserves the novel's central forced-marriage-to-partnership arc, Liu Yuru and Gu Jiusi's mutual growth, the Gu family's collapse in Yangzhou, flight to Youzhou, rebuilding through commerce and government service, and the later transition into national political conflict. It substantially compresses the 176-entry source, softens or reshapes some characterization, introduces Luo Zishang much earlier as a visible antagonist, changes several family and political outcomes, and rewrites portions of the final succession crisis.

Coverage: The 40-episode drama adapts the main narrative trajectory through the novel's principal ending rather than stopping at one early arc. It compresses material spanning Liu Yuru and Gu Jiusi's marriage, Yangzhou, Youzhou, business development, Gu Jiusi's official career, war, river and fiscal affairs, Fan Yu's reign and the final Dongdu succession crisis. The source's three post-finale extras are outside the television series, and no reliable one-to-one chapter-to-episode mapping exists for most of

Gu Jiusi entering government service from a low position

SOURCE

Gu Jiusi's later prominence is earned through a long public career rather than inherited directly from his family's wealth. His trajectory eventually carries him from the displaced Gu heir into major administrative and political responsibility.

Youzhou and later government-service arcs

From Episode 18 onward

Source gives: The source follows substantially more of his administrative, political and strategic development across its longer running time.

Screen gives: The drama provides a clearly staged progression from ordinary yamen work to increasingly consequential offices.

Luo Zishang's placement in the narrative

SOURCE

Luo Zishang becomes a major opponent within the novel's larger political story. The official chapter index does not foreground him during the initial marriage chapters; his connection to the Gu family's earlier disaster becomes explicit much later, including a chapter revealing that the Gu-family affair was his design.

Especially Chapters 63-71 and later political arcs
SCREEN

The drama visibly introduces Luo Zishang by Episode 8 and repeatedly returns to his schemes before and after the Yangzhou catastrophe. He becomes the most continuous personal and political antagonist linking the Gu family disaster, Fan Yu's court and the final coup.

From Episode 8 onward

How they relate: The underlying antagonist remains, but the drama establishes Luo Zishang much earlier and uses him more continuously to connect otherwise separate stages of the story.

Source gives: The source allows Luo Zishang's role and connection to earlier events to emerge later within a broader political landscape.

Screen gives: The drama gives viewers a recurring antagonist whose actions provide continuity from the Yangzhou phase to the final succession conflict.

Source synopsis

Liu Yuru has spent fifteen years carefully molding herself into the kind of proper young woman who can secure a respectable marriage and escape the insecurity of her father's household. Instead, circumstances force her to marry Gu Jiusi, Yangzhou's famously irresponsible wealthy playboy, who is equally unwilling to marry her. Their mismatched marriage gradually becomes a partnership. Liu Yuru learns commerce and develops an independent livelihood while Gu Jiusi grows from a privileged young wastrel into a public-minded official. When political upheaval destroys the security of the Gu family and throws the country into war, the couple flee Yangzhou, rebuild their lives in Youzhou and become increasingly involved in commerce, relief work, government, war and national reconstruction. Gu Jiusi ultimately rises to the highest levels of government while Liu Yuru becomes a major merchant and civic benefactor.
